Crown Football Round-Up (21/09/2018)

Ryan Kent started for Rangers at the weekend in the Scottish Premiership against Dundee. Ryan reckons he produced his best performance in a Rangers jersey so far, grabbing his first goal, to make it 2-0 to the home side after just 14 minutes of play. The goal came as Ryan played one-twos with Lassany Coulibaly and Scott Arfield before he curled a low shot past the keeper.

Speaking to RangersTV post-match Ryan said: “The goal meant a lot to me as it is the first goal I have scored in a while. I have been knocking on the door and finally I have broken through. Hopefully I can kick-on and get a few more.”

Steven Gerrard was also thrilled with Ryan Kent’s goal and performance against Dundee, and he felt the winger was unlucky not be named Man of the Match. Speaking to RangersTV he said: “I think Scotty Arfield has robbed man of the match from him there. I thought Ryan was certainly that while he was on the pitch.”

Ryan also travelled to Spain with the Rangers squad on Thursday for their first Europa League group stage match against Villareal. Rangers secured a fantastic first point with a creditable 2-2 draw and twice bounced back from going behind.

More goals at the weekend came from Byron Moore and Bury after he put 2 in the back of the net against Swindon Town. In the 19th minute Byron scored his first goal to give the side a well-deserved lead. But the visitors had come into the match after the break, and they soon equalised. Bury responded to Swindon's goal in the best possible way, as Byron picked up a loose ball from Jay O'Shea’s blocked shot, to claim his second goal of the afternoon.

Byron was also voted social media man of the match on the Bury FC Twitter account and was included in the EFL Team of the Week.

After signing a record deal with Millwall earlier this month, Ryan Leonard made his debut for the Lions in the Championship at the weekend. They faced a tough clash with Leeds at The Den where they drew 1-1.

Corey Whelan also made his debut for Crewe Alexandra after returning from international duty for the Republic of Ireland U21’s. Crewe Alexandra boos David Artell had only positive things to say about Corey making his debut. Artell described him as the ‘best defender on the pitch’, in a match which ended in a goalless draw, away at Cheltenham.

And speaking of returning to the club that introduced him to the game of football Corey said: “I was here as a young lad, I'm familiar with the set-up. As soon as the opportunity came to come back I snatched at it. When you are playing for three points in front of a crowd on a Saturday it makes it more important.”

Goalkeeper Christian Walton featured at the back for Wigan Athletic in their Championship clash at Brentford with the match ending 2-0 to the home side. From the first whistle, the hosts were the dominant side and were denied on a number of occasions by Christian’s impressive saves.

Reflecting on the defeat Christian spoke to iFollow Latics and said: "Brentford were the better team and full credit to them. We've got two good opportunities on Tuesday and Friday night. If we can get two positive results from the next two matches then we'll be in a good place." And on his own performance Christian added: "It was a busy afternoon for me. It's nice to make a few saves and I had to be on my game today, but it's about getting the result, not just me. It's the old cliche 'that's what I'm there for'. It was good to make saves at key moments and it's a confidence boost at the time for myself, but I don't want to get ahead of myself and I'll keep grounded.”

Adam Lewis featured for Liverpool U19’s this week, as they kicked off their UEFA Youth League campaign. The young Reds beat Paris Saint-Germain 5-2, with the squad getting their first goal within 8 minutes. This was followed by a pinpoint cross from Adam, which was headed home by Rafael Camacho. Still dominating the field, Adam was inches away from directing a curling free-kick underneath the crossbar. Watch the highlights here.
